Sometimes sequels surpass the original. Terminator 2 is a famous example. One More Shot (2024) is a lesser-known example.
Scott Adkins returns as Lieutenant Jake Harris from One Shot (2021) and so does director James Nunn. This pair is like the new Isaac Florentine/Adkins or Jesse V. Johnson/Adkins pair up. If you liked One Shot, you’re going to love One More Shot.
The Good
Realistic and gritty action sequences. I thought One Shot had a lot of one-shot scenes but One More Shot takes it up a notch. I also liked the pacing and that the action started right after the first 10 minutes. So, this film doesn’t beat around the bush.
Besides Adkins and veteran Michael Jae White, we have stunt double Aaron Toney (Avengers, Black Panther) who really showcased his action chops in this venture. He stood up to Adkins not once but thrice, and those fights were more memorable than the final showdown between Adkins and White.
The Bad
As mentioned in the preceding paragraph, the final fight isn’t as awesome as the battles throughout the running time. Also, I felt that the visual aesthetics were too grainy so cinematography was a bit lacking.
The Verdict
In the end, the good largely outweighs the bad here. It’s a superb effort from Adkins and Nunn that they have outdone One Shot, which was a commendable movie on its own merits. If you prefer late 90s action to the CGI-filled plethora of big-budget blockbusters of the 2010s and 2020s then you will enjoy One More Shot. And if you’re a Scott Adkins and/or Michael Jae White fan then that’s a bonus.
