Off-Topic: Bumblebee (2018) Review

Off-Topic features articles about all the art forms excluding literature

Despite being super predictable from start to finish as well as offering nothing new in regards to its genre, Bumblebee (2018), is still the finest Transformers movie to be released since the initial two parts. The reasons for this are: This is the first non-Michael Bay headed Transformers venture (Travis Knight is the director). And the script from Christina Hodson relies more on story and characterization than rendering this blockbuster as a CGI fest. Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld gives a performance that complements her reputation even though the rest of the cast is somewhat lacking in talent here. I also felt like John Cena only starred in this exhibition because Paramount couldn’t afford The Rock. Bumblebee is not only a prequel/spin-off but also acts as a reboot for the entire franchise. And whether that’s a good or bad aspect is yet to be determined. But one thing is for certain: The series is off to a worthwhile start.
