What got me excited for Freaky (2020) was filmmaker Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day and its sequel) helming it and although it features his trademark direction, the script by him and Michael Kennedy is marred by predictability.
The cast is great with Vince Vaughn’s performance standing out (he always did make a good villain and here he simultaneously gets the opportunity to show off his comedic chops). There are some highly entertaining sequences both from the perspectives of horror and comedy. But I felt that oftentimes there was simply gore shown for the sake of gore and more focus should have been given to the screenplay instead.
The movie would’ve ended perfectly at 90 minutes but the additional 10 minutes at the end were just there to show girl power even though there were enough female empowerment moments shown throughout the film. The finale seemed to mimic the 2018 Halloween’s ending but it came across as unnecessary.
Overall, Freaky is fun but the body-switch plot has been done better by other movies, especially the flick this one took inspiration from namely Freaky Friday (2003).
